Daina Sgarioto

Artist

Daina Sgarioto (she) is an emerging artist creating on Wurundjeri Land and has recently completed her Bachelor of Fine Art (ceramics) at RMIT University. She is currently studying her Masters in Secondary Teaching with a major in Visual Arts.

She works mostly in ceramic and textile mediums, but draws on her roots of painting and drawing in all her methods of making.

Daina uses punchy, satirical wit to celebrate the mundane and to laugh at the comedy often embedded in painful experiences; her work comments on the silliness of life and reminds us not to take it all too seriously. Daina employs rich colour and experimental composition to express the bright and bubbly essence of her personality. The use of text conveys a kind of inner monologue or attitude, that often speaks to something larger than what it might seem on the surface.

Daina’s work is an expression of her personal navigation through the uncertain and challenging climate we are all living in. Observing her circumstances and translating her inner voice into tangible form is a kind of catharsis for Daina; aspects of her personality, experiences and inner musings are entwined into her work, making each piece one of it's own.

Her art practice has become a safe space for her to share big, little (or anywhere in between) feelings about her experiences. Akin to a hug, her rugs aim to offer a sense of comfort to the viewer and serve as a reminder to laugh where you can and cry when you want to.
